Dr. Tzu-Yu Wu is an optical engineer at Canon, U.S.A., in the Healthcare Optics Research Laboratory. Dr. Wu earned her Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Optical Sciences from the University of Arizona, and a M.S. degree in Physics from National Taiwan University. Dr. Wu’s Ph.D. research was focused on the development of high-resolution imaging devices that provide rapid detection of early stage cancer through a minimally invasive procedure. Her current research at Canon is focused on the development of advanced medical imaging systems such as ultra-miniature endoscope and cardiovascular imaging catheter. Her specialties are optical design, system setup, opto-mechanics, and biomedical optics. Dr. Wu is particularly interested in bench to bedside translation where ideas are transformed from research into clinically viable instruments and ultimately translated into commercialization. She will be speaking on her research background, personal experiences searching for employment and the interview process, as well as, how she prepared in advance for her career. Dr. Wu will also be sharing her experience in transitioning from a researcher to an R&D engineer, and will share her personal view of what it is like working at Canon.

Speaker Series with Eric Rice [11/22/16]

Please join us on Tuesday,  November 22nd for a professional development seminar on negotiating.

Our guest speaker is Eric Rice who has been operating his consulting practice and teaching communication skills for over twenty-five years. During that time, not only has he developed programs and authored scores of papers, training materials/videos and monographs for clients, but also, and perhaps more important, students in the classes he has taught have performed dozens of projects for organizations that have helped the organizations grow and students find jobs.

Since joining the Johns Hopkins community, Eric has developed and taught a series of courses in management topics ranging from negotiations and conflict resolution through ethics and human resources to managing and marketing social enterprises. Additionally, he directs the Masters in Engineering Management Program within the Center for Leadership Education of the Whiting School. Eric has a Master’s degree in Education Psychology and a PhD in Educational Sociology, both from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Speaker Series event: Dr. David Stein [11/8/2016]

Please join us for the incoming EDGE Speaker Series event: Round-table Discussion with Dr. David Stein on November 8, 2016 at 2 PM in Clark 210.  He will talk about his career path and how his JHU education has helped with his success.

Dr. David Stein, PhD, received his doctorate from Johns Hopkins Engineering in 2001, and has since worked with Siemens, where he has served in several roles including VP of Global Engineering and CEO of the Point of Care Business Unit, and has successfully led the development and strategy for numerous products within Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics.  Since 2015 he has been serving as  the Head of Strategy and Innovation for Siemens Healthcare.

Boston Scientific Info Session [9/30/2016]

Representatives from Boston Scientific will be visiting to talk about Boston Scientific Corporation, the types of BSC opportunities available for PhD students, including internships and jobs, and will give helpful tips on how current students can prepare now for industry jobs. Sunipa Saha is a JHU BME M.S. alumna and Dr. Amy Brisben is a BME PhD alumna, and they work in Cardiac Rhythm Management within Boston Scientific. Dr. Brisben is also vastly experienced in research and startup companies, which she acquired before joining Boston Scientific. The work of both Sunipa and Amy include development of sensing and pacing algorithms, ventricular autothreshold technology, defibrillator technologies, and clinical testing of these tools.

BME EDGE Internship Panel [9/24/2015]

qaheadshotAs summer draws to an end, our EDGE interns are back on campus. We are holding a Q&A Session with the returning interns to answer your questions about PhD-level internships. They will be talking about their experiences throughout the internship process, from approaching their mentors, to adjusting to the industry lifestyle, to returning back to graduate school.

Seven interns from several prestigious companies, such as Back Bay Life Science Advisors, IBM, AstraZeneca, and The Data Incubator, will be there to share their internship experiences. The panel session will be followed by appetizer/ drink (beer and wine included) socialization.
