We are very excited to have Tom Fekete, who currently serves as the Director of Corporate Partnerships for the Institute of NanoBioTechnology (INBT) at Johns Hopkins, speak about life after graduate school. Tom has more than three decades of experience in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. He holds multiple patents and served executive level positions in research, engineering and manufacturing with companies in St. Louis, Baltimore, and Philadelphia. Today he serves as a liaison between JHU academics and industry leaders, and as a resource for advising undergraduate and graduate engineering students on their future careers.
November is here, and so is our next BME Edge Alumni Speaker! We are very excited to have Dr. David Gakenheimer (BES JHU 1965 and PhD Caltech 1969), who is the principal developer of the famed LOGICON Caries Detector that is cleared by the FDA as a class 3 device and has been on the market since 1998 with major updates. He also won the 2009 Distinguished Alumni Award from JHU. Dr Gakenheimer will discuss his career path in material science starting in the defense industry and leading to the dental device industry. Discussion will include the steps involved in keeping an invention current and keeping its regulatory status current. Food and drinks provided.
We are holding a Q&A Session with the returning interns to answer your questions about PhD-level internships. They will be talking about their experiences throughout the internship process, from approaching their mentors, to adjusting to the industry lifestyle, to returning back to graduate school.
Interns from several prestigious companies, such as Genentech, Boston Scientific, Quidel, and Medlmmune, will be there to share their internship experiences. The panel session will be followed by appetizer/ drink (beer and wine included) socialization.

Dr. Martha Connolly is the Director of Mtech (The UM Technology Enterprise Institute), Baltimore, and Director of BioEntrepreneurship at the University of Maryland. She is the first woman graduate of the JHU BME program. Her recent career has centered on innovation and has spanned academia, government and private industry. She will speak about non-academic careers for BMEs, entrepreneurship and commercializing technology, and how BME can play a critical role in innovation in medical care.
Dr. Menschik is a ’93 Hopkins alumni in MSE, BSEE, Electrical and Computer Engineering who went on to receive his PhD in Neuroscience and MD degree from University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Menschik is a physician / scientist / engineer turned repeat entrepreneur and investor. Elliot will discuss his career journey from amateur hacker to Hopkins engineer to neuroscientist and physician to tech entrepreneur and now tech investor.
